Overview

The Salonica View team is organizing a one-day excursion and ski experience to the highest peak of Cyprus, Troodos.

About our trip:

We will depart early in the morning from Nicosia, heading to the highest point of Cyprus, Mount Olympus in Troodos. After collecting our ski equipment, we will meet certified ski instructors from the Cyprus Sports Organisation, divided into small groups of 5–10 participants. During a one-hour lesson, the instructors will teach us the basic skiing techniques required for beginners. For more experienced participants, there will be advanced training focused on improving their technique. After the lesson, there will be free time to enjoy skiing on the slopes of Troodos. Later, full of adventure and winter experiences, we will depart for rest, lunch, and free time in Kakopetria.

About Troodos:

Troodos is the highest mountain range in Cyprus. Its peak is called Chionistra (Mount Olympus) and is located at an altitude of 1,951 meters. Today, the Troodos region includes the following state forests:

Troodos Forest (110 sq. km),  Paphos Forest (600 sq. km) , Adelphi Forest (118 sq. km) , Machairas Forest (60.6 sq. km) ,Limassol Forest (69 sq. km)

All state forests fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Forests of the Republic of Cyprus. Residential or other development within these forests is strictly prohibited by law, as they are designated exclusively for forestry purposes. To further protect biodiversity, four Flora and Fauna Protection Areas have been designated:

Tripylos Peak (823 hectares) for the protection of Cyprus cedar forests and the mouflon, Madari (1,187.8 hectares), Mavroi Cremmoi in Paphos Forest (2,557.6 hectares)

220 hectares of Troodos Forest for the protection of rare or endangered plant species and their habitats

In addition, the largest part of Troodos Forest (approximately 90 sq. km) has been declared a National Park, primarily for public recreation.

About skiing:

Skiing originates from Scandinavia and was initially developed as a means of transportation over snow. This was achieved using long wooden boards attached to shoes or boots, known as skis, from which the sport takes its name. The oldest ski artifacts were found in Sweden and Finland and date back 4,000–5,000 years. These early skis were shorter and wider than modern skis. Until the mid-19th century, there was no reliable method to securely attach skis to boots. This changed in 1860, when Norwegian skier Sondre Nordheim introduced bindings that secured the boot not only at the front but also at the heel. This innovation transformed skiing into both a recreational activity and a sport. In 1924, the International Ski Federation (FIS) was founded. (Source: Wikipedia)
