The Salonica View team organizes a mushroom and truffle hunt in Grevena. Come and live a unique experience together in the city of mushrooms!
In a few words:
Grevena welcomes us and welcomes us with a sign at the entrance of the town that says "Welcome to Grevena, the city of mushrooms". A visit to this city should be accompanied by a mushroom and/or truffle hunt and a visit to the wild mushroom and truffle collection and processing workshop. The interest in native mushrooms may have increased in recent years, but for the inhabitants of Grevena, the delicious fungus is a very old part of their tradition and local culture, having even played a vital role in the survival of the population during the years of the Occupation.
We will depart by bus from Thessaloniki and arrive after about two hours at the Mushroom Products workshop in Grevena. Then we will split into two groups. Group A will follow a route through the forest to hunt for mushrooms (a prerequisite for finding mushrooms is the weather, that it has rained a few days before). At the same time, Group B will go out hunting for truffles, since now is the season to collect them, in the company of specially trained dogs.
Then both groups will meet in the laboratory and we will be guided around the premises. We will then watch a presentation about the many different types of edible mushrooms and the different types of truffles found in the area. We will solve questions, and learn which types of mushrooms are edible and which are not, as well as the characteristics to recognize them. Of course, we will also talk about truffles, which types exist, why they are so expensive, and much more.
At the end of our briefing, a meal will follow in the specially designed outdoor area of the workshop where we will watch the cooking of the meal that we will enjoy afterwards. The menu will include mushroom barley, with six rare species of wild mushrooms and/or truffles, individual salad (tomato or cabbage), dessert, and mushroom liqueur.
