A few words about our excursion:

We will start from Nicosia and head for a pilgrimage to the Monastery of Agios Mamas in Morphou. Afterwards, we will have the blessing to meet Father John and worship at the church of Constantine and Helen as well as the chapel of Panagia of Galoktistis in the lower Pyrgos. Then we will get back on the bus and head for dinner at the E.J. Hotel. We will have the opportunity to dive at Omega beach to cool off and relax before going on a pilgrimage to Kykkos Monastery. Finally, we will have time to enjoy an afternoon coffee before returning back to Nicosia through a beautiful route next to the mountains.

A few words about the Monastery of Agios Mamas:

The monastery of Agios Mama is located in Morphou. During the Byzantine years, Saint Mamas was the patron saint of the Acritian military corps. Its interesting church is preserved to this day. It is dedicated to the non-Cypriot martyr Saint Mama, whose relic is said to have miraculously sailed the sea and was found in Cyprus where it was placed in the temple built in his honour in Morphou. This saint is especially honoured in Cyprus and his memory is celebrated on September 2.

A few words about the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen in the Lower Tower:

The church of Saints Constantine and Helen is located in the community square and is the village's main church. Its opening ceremony took place on November 20, 2010. This magnificent church is built in the style of a basilica with a dome. Its interior consists of a gilded iconostasis with images of the Saints of Orthodoxy, while the entire church is covered with iconography.

A few words about the chapel of Panagia Galoktistis:

The chapel is located on a hill between the villages of Kato and Pano Pyrgos. According to the village's inhabitants, the name Galoktistis (Milkbuilt) was given because it was built with milk. It is worth noting that inside the chapel there is preserved mural decoration, which dates back to two phases: the 12th and 14th centuries, and is one of the oldest churches built in Cyprus. According to the testimonies of the inhabitants of the village, in the area where the chapel is located, there used to be a village known as "To Horkoui" and several shepherds lived there. For the inhabitants of this village, we learn that one year their sheep had a great disease, which is why they begged the Virgin Mary to heal them. Virgin Mary helped them and then they built her dilapidated church with milk.

A few words about Kykkos Monastery:

The Kykkos Monastery is located in the mountainous area of Marathasa Valley and is the wealthiest Monastery on the island. It is located at the top of the mountain, at an altitude of 1,318 meters. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Monastery has one of the three icons attributed to the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. The image is plated with silver and kept in a case of celluloid and mother-of-pearl and is placed in front of the iconostasis. The Monastery burned several times and nothing remained of its original building. Religious festivals are held on September 8 (Birth of the Virgin) and on August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin). There is also a museum on the grounds of the Monastery.
