Salonica View Travel Agency is organising a special historical and cultural excursion to the Ancient Theatre of Soli, Karavostasi and the picturesque village of Kato Pyrgos Tillyrias, including a pilgrimage visit to the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen.
A Few Words About Our Excursion
Our journey will begin in Nicosia (St. Stylianos Church / Strovolos).
We will head towards the Astromeritis checkpoint and continue to our first stop at Karavostasi, where we will enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery and admire the impressive Morphou Bay.
We will then visit the historically significant Ancient Theatre of Soli, where we will have the opportunity to explore the archaeological site and see the remains of the Basilica of St. Auxibius.
Afterwards, we will continue along the coastline towards Kato Pyrgos Tillyrias.
There, we will have time to explore the charming village and visit the Medieval Watchtower, an important historical landmark in the area.
We will also have the opportunity to visit the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen for prayer and worship.
Following our visits, participants will have free time for lunch and relaxation before beginning our return journey to Nicosia.
A Few Words About Karavostasi and Ancient Soli
Karavostasi is located in the Morphou region, west of Cyprus's capital, Nicosia.
The village lies within a fertile plain, bordered by the Xeros River to the east and the Kampos River to the west.
Before the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, the main agricultural products of Karavostasi were citrus fruits, including oranges, lemons, grapefruits and citrons, along with smaller quantities of cereals.
The area of Karavostasi has been inhabited since ancient times and played an important role in the island's history.
The ancient city of Soli, one of the significant city-kingdoms of Cyprus, was located nearby.
During antiquity, the port of Soli was situated in the area where the modern village of Karavostasi stands today.
Ships continued to use this location in later centuries, which explains the village's name, Karavostasi, meaning "a place where ships stop or anchor".
According to the historian George Jeffery, during the Ottoman period, ships used the port of Karavostasi to load building materials taken from the ruins of the nearby ancient city of Soli.
Today, the area remains an important historical destination, offering visitors the opportunity to discover Cyprus's rich cultural and archaeological heritage.
