Salonica View is organising a special one-day pilgrimage to the Monastery of Apostle Andrew (Apostolos Andreas), one of the most important religious sites in Cyprus.
A Few Words About Our Pilgrimage
Our journey will begin with departures from Nicosia and Pascal in Larnaca. We will then head towards the Pergamos checkpoint via Pyla.
We will travel through the occupied villages of Prastio and Stylloi before continuing along the beautiful coastline towards Bogazi, Famagusta, where we will stop for approximately one hour for a break.
Afterwards, we will continue our journey to the Monastery of Apostle Andrew, where we will have time for prayer and worship.
On our return journey, we will stop in Rizokarpaso for lunch at a Greek Cypriot tavern.
About the Monastery of Apostle Andrew
The Monastery of Apostle Andrew is located just south of Cape Apostolos Andreas, at the northeastern tip of Cyprus.
Dedicated to Apostle Andrew, it is one of the most significant religious and pilgrimage sites on the island.
According to tradition, while travelling to the Holy Land, the ship carrying Apostle Andrew went off course and struck the rocks near the cape.
When he reached the shore, Apostle Andrew struck the rocks with his staff, causing a spring of water to emerge.
The water was believed to have miraculous healing properties and restored the sight of the ship's captain, who had been blind in one eye.
Since then, the site has become an important place of pilgrimage.
The main monastery church dates back to the 18th century, while the principal monastery buildings were constructed approximately 100 years later.
The Monastery of Apostle Andrew celebrates its feast day on 30 November. However, in earlier times, when pilgrims travelled for several days using animals to reach the monastery, celebrations were also held on 15 August, when one of the largest traditional religious festivals in Cyprus took place.
