Hiking on the Old Kavala Trail - diving at the pool of the waterfall

The Salonica View team is organizing a one-day excursion with hiking on the Old Kavala Trail and a dip in the foothills of the approximately 10m high waterfall. Then free time either in Old Kavala or in Kavala.

A few words about our excursion:

Just 15 kilometers from the city of Kavala you will find the Old Kavala tourist-environmental trail. It is one of the most beautiful walking routes in Kavala and in general in eastern Macedonia. The Old Kavala Trail, which naturally takes its name from the village in which it is part, Old Kavala, is located on the site of the ancient city of Skavala and was founded in 1391, at an altitude of 360 meters on the slopes of Mount Symvolo.

The path is linear with a total length (out and back) of 5.5km of easy and beautiful route. The centuries-old plane trees provide wonderful shade even on the hottest days, while the abundance of ivies and vines, which extend along the tree trunks, create the impression of a "jungle", combined of course with the special flora of the area. Picturesque wooden bridges also ensure that even some of the more difficult parts of the entire route remain easily accessible and completely safe.

On our way, we will pass by a restored watermill, where if we manage to visit it, we will watch how the traditional grinding is done with a water-powered millstone. In addition, we will see a whirlpool, which the old residents of the village called "closet" and was used to wash carpets or heavier clothing (e.g. capes) there.

But the most important attraction of the Old Kavala Trail is the magnificent waterfall, which consistently impresses every visitor to the area. We will see it falling from a height of (approximately) 10 meters, divided into two distinct levels. Over time, in fact, the rush of the waters has carved the surrounding rock, creating two separate pools, in which we can dive while enjoying their crystal clear cold waters.

Distance: 5.5 km (total)

Altitude difference: 160 m.

Suitable for everyone with basic physical condition and for children over 8 years old accompanied by a guardian.

Old Kavala:

is officially recognized as a traditional settlement and has approximately 108 permanent residents (according to the 2011 census). It is also a location that has been known for years to the surrounding populations for the beauty of its natural landscape, its oregano, and its taverns. In the past, Old Kavala had 13 watermills and had a significant production of flour. Most of them now stand in ruins and are covered with dense vegetation, with the last one being discontinued in the 1970s.

Note 2. In case of cancellation of the event due to bad weather conditions, the excursion is transferred to another date. Participants who cannot participate on the specific date will be refunded. However, if the weather conditions still do not allow the event to take place, the event is permanently canceled and everyone is refunded. In case of cancellation by the participants, 7 days or less before the event date, the money is not refunded.
