Overview

The Salonica View team is organizing a one-day excursion and hike to stream Orlia, with impressive waterfalls, crystal clear water platforms, lush vegetation, and steep slopes!

A few words about our excursion:

We will start by bus from Thessaloniki and after about 1.5 hours we will arrive at Dion Pieria where stream Orlia begins near the eastern slopes of Olympus. From the chapel of Saints Constantine and Helen, we will start the hike to the Red Rock Waterfall. The path moves uphill through a lush green landscape with wonderful vegetation. After hiking for about 1.30 hours, we will come across the impressive waterfall of Red Rock, whose waters fall with a roar and fury from a height of 20 meters and form a wonderful crystal clear platform. There we will have time to swim and rest! Then we will return back to the starting point and go to Dion where we will have free time for lunch and coffee.

According to legend:

One of the oldest streams in Pieria and of particular importance for Olympus, Orlias was a river in ancient times and was originally called Heliconas before being associated with the main representative of the singing art and the lyre, Orpheus. According to legend, the Pierian Muses lived in Heliconas, singing and dancing near their father, Zeus. Orpheus, who remained in history for his great love with Eurydice, met a horrible death at the hands of the Pierian Muses in the Helicon River at the point where it disappeared into the bowels of the earth.

According to Pausanias, the Muses, regretting the heinous crime they had committed, immediately rushed to the waters of the Helicon River to purify themselves. However, the river god refused to purify them and disappeared beneath the surface of the earth to reappear a little further away under the name Vaphyras or Orlias, at the point where it forms the waterfalls near Dion, continuing its course until its mouth in the sea. The river took its name Vaphyras, meaning stained with blood, or Orlias from the cry of agony of the lost Orpheus.
