Overview

The team of Salonica View organises hiking tours on the Byzantine path of Η.Μ. Eikosifinissa and then a visit to the Biblia Chora Estate in the context of celebrating Wine Tourism Day!

A few words about our trip:

At a distance of about two hours from Thessaloniki is the village of Kormitsa in the prefecture of Serres at an altitude of 300m. in the north-west of the Pangaeo Mountains. Just outside the village where our hike began, we will follow the old Byzantine stone path used by pilgrims to the historic nunnery of Eikosifinissa. The route is easy, about 4 km long, with an altitude difference of 350 m and lasting 2 hours! After we arrive at the monastery there will be time to visit and make a pilgrimage to the monastery. Then we will board the bus and head to the Bible Town Estate in Kokkinohori Kavala. There we will have the opportunity to take a tour and taste the wonderful wines of the estate in the context of celebrating Wine Tourism Day! So after a day full of wonderful memories with hiking, pilgrimage and wine tasting we will take the road back to Thessaloniki.

Points of interest:

Byzantine path of Η.Μ. Eikosifinissa:

It is an eminently sacred path, as it was built by Saint Germanos, founder of Η.Μ. Ikosifonissa and that is why its signage also contains some animating villages from the Holy Bible. Excellent Byzantine cobblestone used by the monks and later the nuns as access to the monastery before the safe road to the Monastery was built.

Holy Monastery of Ikosifinissa:

It is a historical monastery of great importance, as it is one of the largest pilgrimages in Macedonia and the oldest active monastery in Greece and Europe. It is located at an altitude of 750m. in an area overgrown with trees on Mount Pangaeo. It was founded by Saint Germanos after his return from Palestine, in 518 AD. The handmade miraculous icon of Panagia Eikosifinissa located inside the monastery is available for visitors to visit. Another feature of the monastery is the two cypress trees that miraculously grow for many years on the roof of the church.

Estate Biblia Chora:

It is located on the slopes of Mount Pangai, in Kokkinohori Kavala. Its creators, oenologists Vangelis Gerovasileiou and Vassilis Tsaktsarlis, established an organic vineyard there in 1998, which today occupies an area of 650 acres. In the modern winery, surrounded by the privately owned vineyard, all the wines of the Estate are produced.
