The Salonica View alternative tourism office organizes a one-day hike to the Murion waterfall (Belles) and a visit to Lake Doirani and Obelisk Hill.
A few words about our trip:
We will start early by bus from Thessaloniki. We will head towards the village of Kilkis. From there, after a nearly two-hour drive, we will turn towards the village of Mouries. Entering the village we will continue our route until we meet the Mouries railway station. At this point, the mountain guide and leader of the expedition will talk to us about the route the group will follow. After completing our hike we will return to our bus and visit Lake Doirani. Those who wish will have the opportunity to climb to the top of the Obelisk. In the end, we will have free time for rest and coffee before returning back to Thessaloniki.
A few words about our waterfall hike:
From the Mouries Railway Station, we will follow an asphalt road for about 4 km initially and then we will enter a dirt road for about 3 km which leads us to the beginning of the trail. At the beginning of the path, there is also a recreation area with benches, a kiosk, and table seats. Our hike will first start on a forest road and then on a path through an impressive forest until we reach the impressive Muria waterfall. The path is relatively easy to pass and with gentle slopes. The waterfall is 720 meters long. We will have time to enjoy the waterfall and take a bath. Then we will return by the same route.
Excursion highlights:
Flora of the hike:
Through our hiking route, we will encounter a forest full of beeches, oaks, and century-old plane trees.
The Murion waterfall:
It is located on Mount Beles, north of Mouries village in Kilkis. The flow of water is great all year round and comes from a stream that originates from Mount Belles at an altitude of about 1450 m. The waterfall is at an altitude of about 720 m. The stream then heads south towards the Mouries Railway Station and after joining other streams in the area it turns west and flows into Lake Doirani.
The lake of Doirani:
It is located in the north of the prefecture of Kilkis and at a distance of only 75 km from Thessaloniki. At the beginning of the 20th century, the area of Doirani was associated with military conflicts, which marked Greek and world history. The battle of the same name was fought in the area between Greek and Bulgarian troops in 1913. The lake also formed the southernmost line of the Macedonian Front of World War I and its southern shore was the scene of yet another battle, this time between the allied Greek and British troops, attacking from the south and of Bulgarian troops that were to the east of the lake. Today, on a hill a few hundred meters south of the lake, there is a memorial to the battle and two cemeteries for the Greek and British soldiers.
Obelisk Height:
At the top of the hill "Obeliskos" N.W. of the lake, dominates the British World War I Doiran Memorial, with its imposing marble lions - symbols of the old British Empire. The imposing memorial, for the British Thessaloniki Force a reference point for more than 2,000 Commonwealth soldiers whose graves are unknown, was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and crafted by Walter Gilbert in the late 1930s. The site offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of the lake and the surrounding area.
