Overview

Salonica View alternative tourism office organises a wonderful one-day hike in the heart of the magical Olympus, Gortsia trail - Petrostrugka refuge!

A few words about our excursion:

Starting point for the Petrostrougas refuge is the junction of Gortsia (1100m.alt.) where it is about 2.5 hours by car from Thessaloniki. So, full of energy, we will start from the beautiful path to the Petrostruga refuge through a forest of black pines, smoothly ascending on the ridge of Gorcia. Then passing through beech trees we will reach the Barba plateau, where it will be the first rest of our ascent. From there we will continue with a smooth uphill in a deep shaded field through a forest of conifers and beech. The ascent line follows the sides of the Kolokithia ravine, crossing the Koka shoulder. After facing the meadow of Stragos, we continue on the central path to the Petrostrougas shelter. Here it is worth mentioning that the shelter rises at the bottom of a sloping stone slope of centuries-old rombola in 1940m. altitude. There will be one hour free time at the lodge to relax and eat. The route is easy to moderate as far as the level of difficulty is concerned, a total distance of about 11km (one way) and with an ascent time set at about 2.5 hours!

The Petrostruga shelter:

Built in a beautiful forest of beeches and centuries-old rombola, at 1,940 meters altitude is the Petrostruga shelter, which is managed by the Hellenic Rescue Team. The visitor can enjoy, in addition to the wonderful view, cooked food and drinks, the heat from fireplaces and wood stoves in all areas of the shelter, but also the hospitality of its managers.
