Overview

The Salonica View team organizes a two-day excursion from Nicosia to Troodos and Paphos.

A few words about our trip:

First Day: 04/03/23 (Saturday)

Our excursion will start from Nicosia and more specifically from the handicraft center. We will head to the Cyprus Railway Museum in Evrychou. Then we will visit Kakopetria where we will have free time for rest and coffee. After resting we will continue our route to the Holy Monastery of Timiou Prodromou which is located in Mesa Potamos. Then we will visit Omodos and the winery "Oinou Gi" Estate Vassiliadis. Then we will have free time for food in Omodos. Then we will board our bus and depart for Pissouri and our hotel. After we are settled in our rooms there will be free time. In the evening Bingo will be held at the hotel for those who want to participate.

Second Day: 05/03/23 (Sunday)

We will wake up early, to catch the day, for those who want to follow our hike (optional participation), around 7:30. Our hike will start at 8:30. We will walk along the "Genesis of Venus" path. The route is linear, 5km, and is classified as difficult, which is why the very good physical condition is required. The duration of the route is estimated at 2 hours. The slopes with wild vegetation, the herds of animals, the farm with horses that give another tone to the landscape, and the impressive view of the white cliffs that meet the blue sea make our route impressive. After our hike is completed, we will return to the hotel to check out of our rooms. Then we will depart from the hotel for the port of Kato Paphos. There we will have 3 hours of free time for walks, coffee, and food. Afterward, we will board our bus to return to Nicosia.

Excursion Highlights:

Cyprus Railway Museum in Evrycho: The Cyprus Government Railway operated for 46 years from 1905 to 1951. With a length of 122 kilometers and a total of 62 intermediate stations, it connected the capital with the city of Famagusta. The conception of the idea for the creation of the railway began during the period of British rule in Cyprus, in 1878, by the British High Commissioner Sir Garnet Wolseley, to finally start its implementation in 1904. The expansion of the railway line was done gradually starting from Famagusta - Nicosia line then Nicosia - Morphou to end up on the Morphou - Evrycho line. In Evrychou, in the old railway station, a museum is housed, where authentic documents, photographs, objects, and wagons, related to the railways of Cyprus are exhibited, while a platform and part of the railway line have been built.

Holy Monastery of Timiou Prodromou:  This is a men's monastery, dating from the 11th or 12th century, with a possible extension in the 14th century, and is located in Mesa Potamos. In 1878 the temple was destroyed by fire, it was operational again in 1912, but was deserted again in 1916. Then they decided that the Monastery should be used as accommodation for vacationers, who chose the idyllic location for recreation. Thus, the monastery, surrounded by dense, wooded vegetation, functioned as a hotel for a number of decades, until 1950. It remained abandoned until it was restored and inhabited in 2003 by monks from Mahira. The 16th-century church is preserved in the Monastery. In 2013, a new church was built, as well as a new wing of ancillary buildings. Today the Holy Monastery operates normally by its monks, continuing its spiritual work, and celebrates on June 24, the day our church honors the birth of Saint John the Forerunner.

Vasiliadis Land-Estate Winery:  The winery combines high-tech equipment with practices suitable for quality winemaking. The specially designed reception and hospitality areas, combined with the modern audio-visual media it possesses, introduce its visitors to a unique journey in the long Greek wine tradition of the land of Omodos.

Pissouri:  The charming village of Pissouri is located in Limassol District, about 30 kilometers west of Limassol, midway from Limassol to Paphos. It is the 3rd largest village in the administrative area of Limassol District and extends to the sea in the south. It is located in the greenery on the slope of a hill at a distance of 3 kilometers northwest of the "Aspro" cape.
