Overview

The alternative tourism agency Salonica View organizes a two-day winter trip to Troodos combining skiing and hiking activities.

A few words about our excursion:

Our excursion will start from Nicosia and more specifically from the handicraft center. The bus route will be via the Kakopetrias-Prodromos road, with our destination being the village of Prodromos. On the first day in the region, we will do a downhill hike, crossing a wonderful scenic path between lush pine vegetation. At the end of the day, we will have our exit, for food and drinks at the Stavros tavern, while our overnight stay will take place at the Holy Monastery of Kykkos, which gives us the opportunity to stay in a monastery-type building. Our second day will be a skiing day. We will meet our instructors and after the course, we will be able to use our equipment for more practice on the beautiful, snowy slopes of Troodos.

Each of our days separately:

Day 1:

The departure will take place from Nicosia, and more specifically from the handicraft center. After gathering we will head by bus to pick up the necessary ski equipment (shoes, poles, and boots) from the area. Equipped, now, with all the supplies we will need, our adventure begins. Via the Kakopetria-Prodromos road, we will end up in the village of Prodromos. After getting off the bus we will prepare for our first activity, that hiking. The route we will take will be downhill. Going down from the village of Prodromos, we will cross a wonderful picturesque path between rich pine vegetation and we will end up in the village of Lemythos. The total hiking time, including stops for rest and snacks, will be 3 hours (those who do not wish to follow the hike can sit down for a coffee in Prodromos). In the area, there will be the possibility to eat, for anyone who wishes, at the Byzantio tavern. Then we will move to the Holy Monastery of Kykkou, by bus, to arrange our luggage. After we have finished with that, and after the time has passed and it has become dark, there will be an evening out at the Stavros tavern, for a drink.

Day 2:

We will wake up early, to catch the day, around 6. There will be a stop in Satyros for coffee and breakfast. 07:30 we leave and head by bus to Mount Olympus, the top of Cyprus. So, at the snowboarding center, we will meet our instructors, where in a one-hour lesson they will teach us the basic techniques required by the sport, but also for the more advanced, how to improve these techniques. At the end of the course, we will have the whole day with our equipment to enjoy the skiing activity on the beautiful slopes of Troodos. When we leave the ski lift, there will be a stop in the middle of the route for half an hour at the Galata bakery to freshen up and we return for the end of our excursion.

A few words about Troodos:

Troodos is the highest mountain in Cyprus. Its peak is called Chionistra or Olympus and is located at 1951 meters. In Troodos, there are currently the following state forests: Troodos Forest (110 sq km), Paphos Forest (600 sq km), Adelphoi Forest (118 sq km), Machira Forest (60.6 sq km), and Limassol Forest (69 sq.km.). State forests are under the jurisdiction of the Republic's Forestry Department. Within the boundaries of the state forest, residential or any other developments are prohibited by law, as this is intended solely for the fulfillment of forestry purposes. To further protect biodiversity, four Flora and Fauna Protection Areas have been designated: the top of Tripylos (823 hectares) to protect the stands of Cypriot cedar and agronomy, as well as Madari (1187.8 hectares), the Mavori Kremmi in Paphos Forest (2557.6 hectares) and an area of 220 hectares of the Troodos Forest for the protection of rare or endangered plants and their habitats. Also, most of the Troodos Forest (about 90 sq km) has been declared a national park, with the main function being public recreation. (source: Wikipedia)
