The Salonica View team organizes a trek to Rizokarpasos and a pilgrimage to Holy Mary Kanakaria
A few words about our trek:
Our trek will start from Nicosia and the Handicrafts Center and we will head towards Holy Mary Kanakaria Lethrangomi via the Pylas-Rizokarpasos road. Our first stop will be for a pilgrimage to Holy Mary Kanakaria and then we will visit Rizokarpasto, which is the easternmost village in Europe and the only place where Greek Cypriots live after the invasion.
Near the ancient port of Karpasia, about 5 kilometers north of Rizokarpasos, the foundations of an early Christian basilica have been excavated, which was probably the cathedral of the city of Karpasia. Inside the ruins of the basilica is built the church of Saint Filonos, where we will visit.
Then we will go to eat at the "O Giannakis" tavern before taking the road back to Nicosia.
Holy Mary Kanakaria:
is a Byzantine church located in Lythrangomi (Boltasli), on the Karpasia peninsula in the province of Famagusta in Cyprus. Since 1974, the wider area in which the temple is located belongs to the unrecognized state of Northern Cyprus. Holy Mary Kanakaria is known for its Byzantine mosaics of the 6th century AD which were inside it before being detached by antiquarians in the late 1970s, as happened in the neighboring Holy Mary tis Kyra.
Rizokarpasos school history:
From 1840 it operated at the Rizokarpas school. Later, Greek education in Rizokarpasos was promoted on a better basis and they succeeded in establishing in 1917 the "Higher Practical School", a precursor of today's "Six-Class Gymnasium". At the same time, there were two schools for elementary school children: one for boys and the other for girls. The schools functioned until 1974 when their operation was interrupted due to the Turkish occupation.
The Primary School reopened (in the Arrnagogeio building) in September 1975. In 1977 the school had 5 teachers and 200 students, while in November 1978 it had 3 teachers and 164 students. In 2010 it had only 19 students.
On April 11, 2005, the operation of the Rizokarpasos Kindergarten was completed.
The Turks, however, did not allow the operation of the Gymnasium after the Turkish invasion. After much pressure on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus, this was achieved in 2004. The high school reopened with 16 students (in the building of the Girls' School of Rizokarpasos). The original building of the Gymnasium was used by the Turks for their own training school.
Today, the site of the old Rizokarpasos Boys' School hosts the Rizokarpasos Primary School and Kindergarten.

Note 2. For the best functioning of the event and for safety reasons, participants must comply with the instructions of the attendants.
Note 3. In case of cancellation of the event due to bad weather conditions, the excursion is moved to another date. Participants who are unable to participate on that date will be refunded. However, if again the weather conditions do not allow the event to take place, the event is permanently canceled and everyone is refunded. In case of cancellation by the participants, 7 days or less before the date of the event, the money is not returned.
