Salonica View is organising a pilgrimage to the Monastery of Apostolos Andreas, one of the most important religious sites in Cyprus.
About Our Pilgrimage
Our journey will begin in Limassol, with additional pick-up stops in Nicosia and at Pascal in Larnaca. We will then continue towards the Pergamos crossing point via Pyla.
We will travel through the villages of Prastio and Stylloi before continuing along the coastline towards Boghazi, Famagusta, where we will stop for approximately one hour for a break.
We will then continue our journey towards the Monastery of Apostolos Andreas, where we will have time for pilgrimage, prayer and a visit to the monastery.
On our return journey, we will stop in Rizokarpaso, where there will be time for lunch at a Greek Cypriot tavern.
About Apostolos Andreas Monastery
The Monastery of Apostolos Andreas is located near Cape Apostolos Andreas, at the northeastern tip of Cyprus. Dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle, it is one of the island’s most important religious and pilgrimage sites.
According to tradition, while Saint Andrew was travelling to the Holy Land, the ship carrying him was forced off course and reached the rocky coast near the cape.
When Saint Andrew came ashore, he struck the rocks with his staff and a spring of water appeared. According to the traditional account, the water had healing properties and restored the sight of the ship’s captain, who had lost the sight in one eye. The site subsequently became an important place of pilgrimage.
The main church of the monastery dates back to the 18th century, while the principal monastery buildings were constructed approximately a century later.
The feast day of Saint Andrew is celebrated on 30 November. Traditionally, however, the monastery was also an important pilgrimage destination around 15 August. In earlier times, when pilgrims travelled for several days by animals to reach the monastery, this summer pilgrimage developed into one of the largest religious gatherings in Cyprus.
