The Salonica View team organizes a trip to occupied Morphou, the theater of ancient Solon, and the occupied village of Karavostasi.
A few words about our trek:
Our trek will start from Nicosia and the Handicraft Center. We will head towards the Astromeritis roadblock. After passing the village of Zodia we will make the first stop at Agios Mama in Morphou. We will depart from Morphou and pass through the occupied villages of Nikitas, Pentageia, Prasteio, Xero, and River Kampos (villages whose time stopped in 1974) and we will end up at the historically invaluable Theater of Solos. Afterward, we will have free time in Karavostasi, on the beach to admire the magic of the imposing bay of Morphou (whoever wants can bring his swimsuit for swimming). We will continue our route, to reach the Lefka barricade. We will pass to the free areas, a little below Kalopanagiotis, in the Orkoda area in the Troodos mountain range. Shortly after the roadblock is the ¨Panorama¨ tavern where we will end up for a meal, (as a family now) to end our day in the most beautiful way. From there we will depart to return to Nicosia via the main Kalopanagioti-Nicosia road.
A few words about the Monastery of Agios Mamas:
The monastery of Agios Mama is located in Morphou. During the Byzantine years, Agios Mamas was the patron saint of the Acritian military corps. From this, his interesting church is saved. It was dedicated to the non-Cypriot martyr Saint Mama, whose relic is said to have miraculously sailed the sea and found itself in Cyprus, whereupon it was placed in the temple built in his honor in Morphou. This saint is especially honored in Cyprus and his memory is celebrated on September 2.
A few words about Karavostasi & Soloi:
It is located in the geographical region of Morphou, west of the capital Nicosia. The landscape of the village is divided to the east by the Xero River and to the west by the Kampos River. The main crops in Karavostasi, before the Turkish invasion of 1974, were citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and citrons) and some grains. The area of Karavostasi has been inhabited since Antiquity and was very important. The ancient city of Solos was located there. In the location where the village is located, the port of Solos existed during Antiquity. Ships were stationed at the same location even in recent times, which is why the village was named Karavostasi, which exactly means a stop (station) of ships. According to Geoffrey, the port of Karavostasi was used (during the Turkish Occupation) by ships that docked there and loaded building materials from the ruins of the neighboring ancient city of Solos.
