The Salonica View team organizes a trip to Kantara Castle, Akanthou, and Kyrenia.
A few words about our trip:
We will start from Nicosia and head towards the roadblock of Saint Dometios. We will pass through our occupied villages Mia Milia, Neo Village, Lapathos, and Trikomo until we reach our first destination which is the Castle of Kantara. Afterward, we will get back on the bus and head to Akanthou. Finally, we will continue our journey to reach our last destination, Kyrenia, for our next stop. In Kyrenia, we will have free time to rest. From Kyrenia, we will take the main highway that leads to Nicosia and the free areas.
A few Words about Kantara Castle:
The Castle of Kantara is located in Pentadakhtylos, on the occupied side of Cyprus. It was built in the 11th century by the Byzantines and destroyed by the Venetians in the 16th century. The castle of Kantara is believed to have got its name from the Arabic word "Kandar" which means steep rock and this is because of the location in which the castle is situated. According to popular tradition, the castle was built by a beautiful but very evil woman, Rigaina! She was torturing the workers who, after finishing the work of building the castle, ordered her soldiers to throw them over the cliff so that they would not reveal the secrets of the castle. The castle of Kantara is the third of the important castles of the Pentadakhtylos mountain range.
A few words about Kyrenia:
Kyrenia is one of the six cities of Cyprus and the capital of the province of the same name, one of the six provinces of the island. It is one of the ancient cities of Cyprus, as its name shows, which preserves the name of Kyrenia, the most ancient city of Achaia. It is actually two cities, "Kato Kyrenia" which extends around its small port, of very limited capabilities, and "Upper Kyrenia" which extends further south. Kyrenia is built on the northern coast of Cyprus, opposite the southern coast of Asia Minor, and has behind it the impressive mountain range of Pentadaktylos
