Overview

The Salonica View team organizes an excursion to the Monastery of Kykkos and the lower Tower of Tilleria.

A few words about our trip:

We will start from Nicosia and head to Kykkos Monastery. There, we will have time to visit the Monastery and for a quick coffee. Then, we will continue through a beautiful route next to the mountains to reach Kato Pyrgos. There we will have free time to rest, swim at the beach and eat. Finally, before our return to Nicosia, there will be a short stop in Karavostasi. From there we will make our way back.

A few words about Kykkos Monastery:

The Kykkos Monastery is located in the mountainous area of Marathasa Valley and is the richest Monastery on the island. It is located at the top of the mountain, at an altitude of 1,318 meters. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Monastery has one of the three icons attributed to the Apostle and Evangelist Luke. The image is plated with silver and kept in a case of tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl and is placed in front of the iconostasis. The Monastery burned several times and nothing remained of its original building. Religious festivals are held on September 8 (Birth of the Virgin) and on August 15 (Assumption of the Virgin). There is also a museum on the grounds of the Monastery.

A few words about Karavostasi

It is located in the geographical region of Morphou, west of the capital Nicosia. The landscape of the village is divided to the east by the Xero River and to the west by the Kampos River. The main crops in Karavostasi, before the Turkish invasion of 1974, were citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and citrons) and some grains. The area of Karavostasi has been inhabited since Antiquity and was very important. The ancient city of Solos was located there. In the location where the village is located, the port of Solos existed during Antiquity. Ships were stationed at the same location even in recent times, which is why the village was named Karavostasi, which exactly means a stop (station) of ships. According to Geoffrey, the port of Karavostasi was used (during the Turkish Occupation) by ships that docked there and loaded building materials from the ruins of the neighboring ancient city of Solos.
