Overview

The Salonica View Travel Office is organizing a unique one-day cultural excursion to the Byzantine churches of Cyprus, with the aim of discovering their history, architecture, and spiritual significance through a beautiful journey in the Troodos mountains.

A few words about our excursion:

We will depart in the morning from Solomou Square in Nicosia, heading first to the Church of Panagia tis Asinou. We will then visit Panagia Podithou in Galata, and our final stop will be Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis. Throughout the excursion, an English-speaking guide will accompany us, presenting the history and unique characteristics of each monument. At the end of the day, we will enjoy a meal at a traditional Cypriot tavern before returning to Nicosia.

Points of Interest:

Panagia tis Asinou

One of the most famous Byzantine churches in Cyprus, Panagia tis Asinou was built in the early 12th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is renowned for its exceptional frescoes dating from the 12th to the 17th century, considered among the finest examples of Byzantine art on the island. Visiting the church offers a unique journey into Cyprus’ rich religious and cultural history.

Panagia Podithou – Galata

Located in the beautiful Solea Valley, Panagia Podithou is also part of the UNESCO-listed painted churches of Troodos. Built in 1502, it combines Byzantine artistic tradition with later historical influences and stands as an important example of Cyprus’ post-Byzantine heritage. Its peaceful setting and historical character make it a highlight for visitors exploring the Troodos region.

Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis

Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, dating back to the 11th century, is one of the most significant Byzantine monuments in Cyprus and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once part of a monastery complex, the church is famous for its remarkable frescoes covering several centuries, showcasing the evolution of Byzantine painting. It remains one of the island’s most impressive and well-preserved historical landmarks.
