The team of Salonica View organizes a pilgrimage to the monastery of Apostolos Andreas.
A few words about our trip:
Our excursion will start from Nicosia and we will head towards the roadblock of Pyla. We will pass through our occupied villages, Mia Malia, Agastina, Musoulita, Pyrga, Stylloi, and Engomi. There we will make a stop at the monastery and the tomb of the Apostle and then we will continue along the sea coastline to reach Bogazi where we will make a stop-break for about 1 hour. Then we will continue our route and end up at the monastery of Apostolos Andreas for a pilgrimage. On the way back we will have time to eat in Rizokarpasos a Greek Cypriot tavern.
A Few Words about the Monastery of Apostle Andreas:
The Monastery of Apostolos Andreas is a monastery located a little south of Cape Apostolos Andreas. It is dedicated to the Apostle Andreas and is one of the most important religious sites in Cyprus. The traditional story of the founding of the monastery says that, during a journey to the Holy Land, the ship carrying Saint Andrew left its course and struck the rocks at the cape. When he reached land, the Apostle hit the rocks with his stick, whereupon a spring gushed forth. The waters proved to have healing powers and restored the sight of the ship's captain who had been blinded in one eye. The site then became a place of pilgrimage. The church of the main monastery dates back to the 18th century, while the main buildings were built 100 years later. The monastery of the Apostle Andrew celebrates on November 30, but because on that date the weather is already winter, and because in the past the pilgrims traveled with animals for many days in order to visit the monastery, it was also celebrated on August 15, where was becoming one of the biggest festivals in Cyprus.
