The Salonica View team is organizing a one-day excursion to the Lower Tower of Tillyria, a pilgrimage to Saint Raphael in Pachyammos, a visit to the Dragon's Cave in Pomos, and a visit to the Monastery of Saint Neophytos in Paphos.
A few words about our excursion:
We will start from Nicosia and head towards the Astromeritis roadblock. There will be a short stop for rest and coffee at the square of the Lower Tower of Tillyria. Then we will continue our journey to visit the Holy Church of Saint Raphael in Pachyammos for a pilgrimage. Then we will transfer to our bus and continue our journey to the village of Pomos in the Paphos district. We will stop at the imposing Dragon's Cave, a rocky cave of special natural beauty, opening onto the sea. Our next stop will be the Holy Monastery of Saint Neophytos in Paphos for a pilgrimage, where the hermit Neophytos carved a cave in the mountain by himself, which is called “Egkleistra”.
A few words about the church of Saint Raphael:
The Holy Church of Saint Raphael in Pachyammos is located at the foot of Lorovounou, in a remote area that was severely tested in August 1964 by Turkish air raids. The church is a Byzantine-style building, decorated with a wooden carved iconostasis with images of Saints. According to religious tradition, it was erected six years after a miracle that Saint Raphael performed on a resident of his area. Every year the church receives thousands of visitors from all over Cyprus and abroad. From the church grounds visitors can admire the magnificent view that lies before them.
A few words about the Dragon's Cave:
The Cave is located in the village of Pomos. It is a rocky cave of particular natural beauty, with an opening to the sea. The cave is deep and even fresh water comes out of it to this day. In the past, tradition said that ships would arrive in the area and rob the area. In this cave was the famous Dragon, who protected the area from the evils that were happening at that time. Another version spread by the residents is that the cave was inhabited by the Dragon and Dracaena, who guarded the water as a precious commodity. This version is also connected to the two large pillow-shaped rocks located outside the cave that the “couple” is said to have used to rest.
A few words about the Monastery of Saint Neophytos:
The Monastery of Saint Neophytos is located approximately 9 kilometers north of Paphos and is one of the most important religious and cultural monuments in Cyprus. It was founded by Saint Neophytos in the 12th century and is known for its unique location and spiritual significance. Saint Neophytos, who lived in a cave in the rock, founded the monastery as a place of asceticism and prayer. The monastery hosts many icons and monuments related to the spiritual tradition of Cyprus and is an important pilgrimage site for the faithful. The tranquility of the landscape and its spiritual atmosphere attract visitors and pilgrims from all over the world.
