The tourist office of alternative tourism Salonica View, organizes a trip to the occupied Morphou, the theatre of the ancient Solos and the occupied village Karavostasi.
A few words about our journey:
Our journey will start from Nicosia and the Craft Center. We will head to the Astromeritis roadblock to entering occupied Cyprus. After passing the village of Zodia we will make the first stop at Agios Mama in Morphou. We will depart from Morphou and we will pass through our occupied villages Nikitas, Pentageia, Prastio, Xero, Potamos of Kampos (villages which time stopped in 1974) and we will end up in the historically invaluable Theater of Solos. Later, we will have free time in Karavostasi, on the coast to admire the magic of the imposing bay of Morphou (whoever wants can bring his swimsuit for a swim). We will continue our journey, to reach the roadblock of Lefka, and pass to the free areas, a little below Kalopanagiotis, in the area of Orkonda in the Troodos mountain range. Shortly after the roadblock is the tavern ¨Panorama¨ where we will end up for food and drink (like a family now) to end our day in the most beautiful way. From there we will depart to return to Nicosia via the main road Kalopanagioti-Nicosia.
A few words about the Monastery of Agios Mamas:
The monastery of Agios Mama is located in Morphou. During the Byzantine years, Agios Mamas was the protector of the Akriti war corps. From this, his interesting church survives. It was dedicated to the non-Cypriot martyr Agios Mama, whose relic is said to have crossed the sea in a miraculous way and was found in Cyprus when it was deposited in the temple built in his honour in Morphou. This saint is especially honoured in Cyprus and his memory is celebrated on September 2.
A few words about Karavostasi & Solos:
It is located in the geographical region of Morphou, west of the capital Nicosia. The gloomy landscape of the village is divided to the east by the Xeros river and to the west by the Kampos river. The main crops in Karavostasi, before the Turkish invasion of 1974, were citrus fruits (oranges, lemons, grapefruits and citrus apples) and a few grains. The area of Karavostasi has been inhabited since antiquity and was very important. There was the ancient city of Solos. At the location where the village is located, in ancient times the port of Solos existed. Boats were parked at the same location in recent years, which is why the village was named Karavostasi, which means exactly the stop (station) of boats. According to Jeffrey, the port of Karavostasi was used (during the Turkish occupation) by ships that parked there and loaded building materials from the ruins of the neighbouring ancient city of Solos.
