Salonica View organizes a one-day excursion and hike in the occupied Rizokarpasos of Cyprus. Come and get to know another part of this historic place by combining it with hiking and exercise. As part of our excursion, we will also visit the church of Saint Philonas. After the end of our hike, we will go to relax and unwind in the picturesque Bogazi where we will have the opportunity to get to know the beautiful fishing port of the village.
A few words about Rizokarpaso:
Rizokarpaso is the easternmost village of Cyprus and is located in the area of Karpasia. It is one of the most historic villages and this is because its inhabitants, despite the Turkish invasion of 1974 and the brutality of Attila, most of them endured and stayed in their homes. This had the effect of maintaining the Greek element in the occupied territories to this day, always under the watchful eye of the conqueror.
A few words about the church of Saint Philonas:
Near the ancient port of Karpasia, about 5 kilometers north of Rizokarpasos, in a wonderful location, is the church dedicated to Saint Philonas. The church, which dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries, was built on the ruins of an early Christian basilica of the 4th and 5th centuries AD, which was probably destroyed by the Arab invasions. Elements are preserved from both churches. The original church was a three-aisled basilica of small dimensions, while the incorporated new church is of the inscribed cruciform type with a dome and covered the middle and south aisles of the basilica, but not its entire length. The walls of the church are built with roughly squared ashlars. Remains of a clay sarcophagus are preserved in the north aisle, which is believed to be the tomb of Saint Philon.
