Overview

The Salonica View team is organizing a one-day excursion and hike on the “6 fountains” nature trail in the village of Arsos in the Limassol district, followed by a visit to the Palouze festival.

A few words about our route:

Our group will start from Nicosia (Cyprus Handicraft Center) in the morning. Then, we will board a boat with a first stop in Kofinou and then a stop in Limassol. Then we will visit the picturesque village of Omodos, where we will enjoy our coffee in a traditional environment. Our hike will start from the village of Arsos, near the “Athkies” fountain on the main road to Saint Nikolaos. The route connects six medieval fountains, offering a unique glimpse into the past. We will walk along the river from the “Athkies” Fountain to the “Poullin” Fountain, passing by the remaining traditional fountains to the medieval chapel of the Virgin Mary and the traditional Olive Mill. This is an easy route, suitable for all levels of experience. At the end of the hike we will head to the Palouze Festival in Arsos, where we will enjoy local delicacies and traditional flavors.

Points of interest:

6 Fountains:

Historically, during the medieval period, these fountains were vital for the inhabitants of Arsos, as they provided water for their homes and animals. It is noteworthy that even during periods of drought, the springs continued to provide water, which highlights their importance for the village.

The first fountain, and starting point of the trail, is “Athkies”, which took its name from the willows (athkies) that grow around it.

The second fountain, “Os’ Arkatzin”, was used to water the gardens of the area and next to it is the Byzantine Monastery of Catholic Holy Mary.

The third fountain, “Pano Vrisi”, was used by the women of the village to wash clothes and sheets.

The fourth fountain, “Kostena”, was destroyed in the early 1970s to be converted into a water tank.

The fifth fountain, “Koupas”, was mainly used for watering animals.

The last fountain, “Poullin”, is an impressive fountain with two arches and marks the end of the route.
