Overview

The Salonica View alternative tourism agency organizes a four-day excursion from Cyprus to Parnitha and the Bafi refuge.

A few words about our trip:

Our excursion will start from Larnaca with a morning flight. After arriving in Athens we will travel by bus to the area of Parnitha and the Bafi refuge. On our first day in the area we will engage in the activity of cycling, while at the end of the day, we will return to the lodge for lunch. The next day, after our breakfast, we will move by private vehicles to the starting point of the hike, in order to explore the Panos cave or Lychnospilia. There are two ways to reach the cave, one is by hiking through a canyon and then abseiling, while the other is by a longer hike past the impressive waterfall of about 15 meters, weather permitting conditions. The spelunking activity will be all day so snacks and small meals will be provided to all participants until we return to the lodge for food. The third day is hiking day. On the hike, we will be divided into small groups. Each group will be assigned an animator who will make sure to enrich the experience with useful information about the forest, historical facts, and special knowledge about the mountain and its conditions. At the end of the hike, we will spend our last night at the refuge, after first enjoying the homemade food it offers. Our last day includes breakfast at the lodge and a city tour of Athens with free time for eating and walking, as well as the return flight, which will take place late in the evening.

Each activity separately:

Cycling:

Cycling is a mild form of active recreation. It offers everyone memories of their childhood, and rejuvenates, entertains, and invigorates body and soul. Parnitha is the highest mountain of Attica with a maximum altitude of 1413 meters. It has a rich flora - with the "king of the forest" the Kefalonia fir, and very interesting fauna - with the red deer naturally leading the way. We can choose a short route of 8 km or a more impressive 16 km which is the peripheral road of the mountain with alternating views from the basin to the Euboean gulf. "Reference" and "supply" point to the Buffy shelter. If we are lucky, a herd of deer may appear out of nowhere and accompany us on our way.

Speleology:

The Panos cave got its name from the worship of the Nymphs and Pan, the goat-footed god of the ancients, protector of mountains, forests, caves, and flocks. It is located on the left slope of the Goura ravine at an altitude of 620 m, on the Tamilthi mountain, at the southwestern foothills of Parnitha, in the Municipality of Fylis. Access is either from St. Triada – Paleochori or from the area of Phyli. In both cases, we start the hike to the green gorge of Keladona, where the imposing cave of Panos is also "hidden" at one point. We continue to the cave which consists of two rooms that are connected to each other, making herpin, with a very narrow and low passage. In the spring and in the water-filled stalactite basins of the first chamber lived a few years ago the rare nirphagus (small aquatic animals). The second chamber, explored only in 1960 by I. Ioannou, has a wonderful basin decorated with stalactite material. The cave is also called "Light Cave", thanks to the numerous lamps, about 2,000, that were found during the archaeological research.

Hiking:

Our hiking options will be suitable for all fitness levels. The area has hiking routes on gently sloping paths where we will be given the opportunity to encounter habitats of unique beauty and springs with running water in the fir forest or paths of increased difficulty. The starting or finishing point will be the Buffy shelter. Duration 1 to 3+ hours. On the hike, we will be divided into small groups. Each group will be assigned an animator who will make sure to enrich the experience with useful information about the forest, historical facts, and special knowledge about the mountain and its conditions.
