Overview

The Salonica View team is organizing a hike to Kefalovryso of Kythrea.

A few words about our visit:

We will start from Nicosia (Cyprus Handicraft Center) and head towards the Saint Dometios roadblock. After leaving the main Nicosia - Famagusta road, we will make a quick stop for a toilet before reaching our first destination, which is Kefalovryso of Kythrea. There we will have the opportunity to see the historic Kefalovryso, which was considered the largest source of running water in Cyprus. Then we will continue to our next destination and will pass through the five fingers and the area of Chalefka with the destination of Saint Ambrosios. Then we will continue our journey towards the coastal area of Alacati. Then we will visit Kyrenia. There we will have free time to rest. From Kyrenia, we will take the main highway that leads to Nicosia and the free areas.

A few words about the Kefalovryso of Kythrea:

The Kefalovryso of Kythrea was considered the largest source of running water in Cyprus. That is why until the end of the 1920s, Kythrea and its surroundings were one of the most productive areas of Cyprus. The spring is located in the highest part of the inhabited area at an altitude of 264 meters. The spring is covered by a domed structure, the bota as it is called, which is spacious and allows for comfortable circulation.

Saint Ambrosios of Kyrenia:

An occupied village in the Kyrenia district, 160 m. above sea level, 24 km. east of Kyrenia. The village is built on the coastal plain of Kyrenia. The altitude in its area increases noticeably from the coastal plain to the south where it turns into a mountain with high and steep mountain peaks reaching 800 meters. The landscape is not only sloping but also dissected by small streams that originate from the Pentadaktylos ridge and flow into the Kyrenia Sea area.

A few words about Kyrenia:

Kyrenia is one of the six cities of Cyprus and the capital of the homonymous province, one of the six provinces of the island. It is one of the ancient cities of Cyprus, as its name indicates, which preserves the name of Kyrenia, the most ancient city of Achaia. It is actually two cities, "Lower Kyrenia" which extends around its small port, with very limited facilities, and "Upper Kyrenia" which extends further south. Kyrenia is built on the northern coast of Cyprus, opposite the southern coast of Asia Minor, and has the impressive Pentadaktylos mountain range behind it.
