Salonica View organizes a full-day excursion with stops at sanctuaries, monuments and natural landscapes of unique value. We will visit Virgin Mary Stazousa in the village of Pyrga, Virgin Mary Angeloktisti in Kiti and Larnaca Salt Lake and we will end our day with a lunch by the sea, at the Akrogialli fish tavern in Mazotos.
A few words about our excursion:
Departure in the morning from Nicosia (Cyprus Handicraft Center) to the church of Virgin Mary Stazousa in the village of Pyrga, where there will be time for pilgrimage. The monastery is known for the miraculous myrrh that "drips" from the shrine. Then we will go to the Holy Church of Virgin Mary Angeloktisti in Kiti, which is one of the rarest Byzantine churches in Cyprus. Our next destination will be the Larnaca Salt Lake, famous for the flamingos that flock there during the winter months. At the end of our excursion, we will have lunch at the fish tavern “Akrogialli” in Mazotos, right next to the sea.
Points of interest:
Virgin Mary Angeloktisti (Kiti):
An 11th-century Byzantine church, built on the ruins of a 5th-century early Christian basilica.
It preserves one of the most important mosaics of early Christian art in Cyprus — the Mosaic of Virgin Mary Angeloktisti: Virgin Mary holding Christ, flanked by Archangels.
The name “Angeloktisti” comes from the tradition that it was built by angels at night.
Virgin Mary Stazousa:
It was built by the Franks, probably in the early 14th century — in the Gothic style, with carved limestone.
According to tradition, before the Gothic building was built, there was a smaller church. The construction of the current one was after a miracle: the Frankish woman who fell ill with bleeding was cured when she worshipped the Virgin Mary — from then on the Virgin Mary was called “Stazousa” (i.e. “the gushing / dripping”) because of its holy water and its therapeutic benefits.
