Overview

The Salonica View team is organizing an excursion to Saint George of the Caves in Erimi, Saint George of Symvoulas, and a visit to Pissouri for swimming and relaxation.

A few words about our excursion:

Our group will start in the morning in Nicosia (Cyprus Handicraft Center). Then, we will embark on the first stop in Kofinou and then a stop in Limassol. Our first stop will be between the communities of Erimi, Kolossi, and Ypsonas, where the Monastery of Saint George of the Caves is located, an impressive monastery built around a cave known as “the Cave of Saint George”. We will have time for pilgrimage and then we will head to the Holy Monastery of Symvoulos Christos, dedicated to Saint George the Trophy Bearer, located between the Sotiras Limassol community and the English Episcopal Bases. We will then visit Pissouri, where we will have time to swim in the bay of Pissouri located at the southern end of the village. At the end of our excursion, we will have time to eat and rest in Pissouri before our return to Nicosia.

Holy Monastery of Symvoulos Christos

Dates from the 6th-7th century AD. According to local tradition, the site was revealed after a miraculous sign in 1991, and since then thousands of believers have come to worship the grace of the Saint, to see his two miraculous icons, as well as his holy relics. Many people report healings and miraculous events that have occurred in the area since the day of the revelation. The name of the monastery is said to be related to the Holy Bible or – according to another version – to the councils that used to take place there, between bishops of the local Churches. Its coastal location made it vulnerable to attacks, and during the Arab raids of the 7th-9th centuries, it suffered looting and destruction, with testimonies of the massacre of the monks of the time.

Monastery of St. George of the Caves (Erimi, West Limassol):

Between the communities of Erimi, Kolossi, and Ypsonas, lies the Monastery of St. George of the Caves, an impressive monastery built around a cave known as “the cave of Ai Giorkou”. A few meters north, the “Fountain of Saint George” gushes, a spring of holy water, known to local farmers, shepherds, and hunters. During the cleaning work of the cave, a carved temple was discovered, indicating an earlier cultic use. Oral tradition and archaeological finds (such as a cross, a reliquary, and coins) indicate the use of the site from the 10th–11th century by ascetics. Today, services are held regularly, culminating on the feasts of Saint George on April 23 and November 23.
