The Salonica View team is organizing a trek to the ancient city of Salamis and the monastery of Apostle Varnavas.
A few words about our trek:
Our route will start from Nicosia (Cyprus Handicraft Center), we will stop to board the Pascal in Larnaca and then we will head towards the Pergamon checkpoint through Pyla. We will pass through our occupied villages until we reach Apostle Varnavas. Then, we will continue our route and reach the city of Salamis. We will walk through the ancient city and have time to discover the kingdom of ancient civilization in Cyprus. Finally, we will continue our journey to reach our last destination which is Famagusta where we will have free time to see the city. From Famagusta we will take the road that leads to the free areas.
A few words about the Monastery of the Apostle Barnabas:
The ancient monastery of the Apostle Barnabas is located approximately 3 km west of the ancient city of Salamis. It was built at the end of the 5th century by Archbishop Anthemios with donations from Emperor Zeno and other wealthy people of the time. The reason for the construction of the monastery was the discovery, not far from the monastery, of the tomb of the Apostle Barnabas. According to tradition, the Apostle Barnabas had appeared three times in the sleep of Archbishop Anthemios, indicating the place of his burial. The Apostle Barnabas was buried with a gospel on his chest. The original form of the church of the Apostle Barnabas was a three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica. A little later, the monks' cells were built around the church, while the relics of the Apostle were also transferred to a specially designed space within the church.
A few words about Salamis:
Salamis was located on the east coast of Cyprus, at the mouth of the Pedieos River, 6 km. north of modern Famagusta. Salamis was the capital of Cyprus for about a thousand years and, according to archaeological findings, was founded by Teucros, son of Telamon, king of the island of Salamis and brother of Ajax, who arrived in Cyprus with other Greeks at the end of the Trojan War. The city took its name from Salamis in Attica. In modern linguistics, it is believed that the name "Salamis" comes from the root Sal- (salt; i.e. salt water) and -amis (i.e. in the middle), thus Salamis is (the place) in the middle of sea water.
A few words about Famagusta:
Famagusta is located in the eastern part of Cyprus, in the bay that also bears its name. Ancient Famagusta was named Salamis. It was later renamed Arsinoe and Constantia. Its Greek Cypriot inhabitants were expelled in 1974 by the Turkish army and today reside in the towns and villages of free Cyprus. It has been referred to by this name (Famagusta), which literally means the city buried in the sand, since the 4th century AD. And indeed, Famagusta was a world-famous tourist resort between 1960 and 1974, due to its golden sandy beach. The city of Famagusta before the Turkish invasion had approximately 40,000 inhabitants and was the third largest city on the island. Until the day of August 14, 1974, the port of Famagusta was the main port of Cyprus and tourism was the sector in which the city stood out. It is indicative that of the approximately 100 hotels operating at that time throughout the island, 45 were in Famagusta.

However, if the weather conditions still do not allow the event to take place, the event will be permanently canceled and everyone will be refunded.

Note 5. Cancellation policy: in case of cancellation less than 72 hours before the event or no-show in the activity/excursion, you will need to cover the full cost of your participation. This policy applies to the coverage of operating expenses and reservations that have already been made.
Note 6. The guides have the right to adjust the stops of the excursion and the program depending on the time available, without omitting important points of interest.
