The Salonica View team organizes a beautiful cycling trip in Nicosia.
A few words about the route:
We will start our cycling, after we have all received our equipment, from the school of Ethnomartyros Kyprianou. The direction we will follow will be toward the linear park, Paphos Gate, Kyrenia Gate, and Famagusta Gate. In Ledra we will take a half-hour break to rest and hydrate, getting energy for our return through the linear park.
Points of interest:
Paphos Gate: it was one of the three entrances to the walls built by the Venetians around the city of Nicosia. The road that started right outside the gate led southwest to Paphos, from where it got its name. It was also known as the gate of San Domenico because it replaced an earlier gate in the Frankish walls, called 'Porta di San Domenico' after the nearby Abbey of San Domenico. The Gate is quite simply an opening in the wall with a vaulted roof. During the British occupation in 1878, part of the walls between the Gate and the Bastion were demolished to make a new opening. The Paphos Gate Police Station is located directly above the original gate.
Famagusta Gate: the most important of the gates of Venetian Nicosia, it opened onto the road that led to the most important port of the island, Famagusta, from where it got its name. It was originally known as Porta Giuliana in honor of Giulio Savorgnano, the engineer who designed and built the Venetian walls in the 16th century. The gate has an impressive facade and consists of an arched passage with a vaulted room, 10.97 meters in diameter, inside. On both sides of the passage are rectangular rooms for the guards. Today. the Gate is the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Nicosia.
