The Salonica View team organizes a pilgrimage and church service at the Monastery of Apostle Andreas in Rizokarpasos.
A few words:
Our trek will start early in the morning from Nicosia and we will head towards the roadblock of Pyla and then towards the monastery of Apostle Andreas. We will make a short rest stop in Bogazi. Then we will continue our route and we will end up at the monastery of Apostle Andreas for our church meeting, where Divine Liturgy will be celebrated there and then we will have time for a pilgrimage. On our return from the monastery we will have time for food and coffee in Rizokarpasos in a Greek Cypriot tavern. At the end we will also visit the church of Agios Filonas in Rizokarpasos.
About the Monastery of Apostle Andreas:
The Monastery of Apostle Andreas is a monastery located a little south of Cape Apostle Andreas. It is dedicated to the Apostle Andreas and is one of the most important religious sites in Cyprus. The traditional story of the founding of the monastery says that, during a journey to the Holy Land, the ship carrying Saint Andrew left its course and struck the rocks at the cape. When he reached land, the Apostle struck the rocks with his staff, whereupon a spring gushed forth. The waters proved to have healing powers and restored the sight of the ship's captain who had been blinded in one eye. The site then became a place of pilgrimage. The church of the main monastery dates back to the 18th century, while the main buildings were built 100 years later. The monastery of the Apostle Andrew celebrates on November 30, but because on that date the weather is already winter, and because in the past the pilgrims traveled with animals for many days in order to visit the monastery, it was also celebrated on August 15, where was becoming one of the biggest festivals in Cyprus.
About the church of Agios Phylons:
The church of Saint Filonas is an early Christian basilica of the 4th-5th century AD located in Karpasia and at a distance of 8 km from the town of Rizokarpasos. Saint Philonas is a local saint of Cyprus and is especially honored in Karpasia. He was bishop of Karpasia during the early Christian years, at the end of the 4th century AD. His selection as bishop was made by Saint Epiphanius, following divine enlightenment, while he also had him as his assistant and replacement on the archbishopric throne. During his tenure as a bishop, the saint built many churches, converted many to Christianity and performed several miracles. His memory is celebrated on January 24.
