Hiking on the path of Metaxas

The alternative tourism office Salonica View organizes a one-day hiking trip on the historical path of Metaxas on Mount Agistro.

A few words about our excursion:

We will start by bus from Thessaloniki and at a distance of about one hour and thirty minutes from our city, we will reach the village of Agistro. Our hike will start from the baths of Agistrou and we will head towards the entrance of the Metaxas path. Then we will continue our journey until we reach the "Three Fountains" fort. There we will see the abandoned stone buildings in which the garrison of the fort lived in peacetime. Then we will take the way back, descending again towards the baths. In the end, we will have time to rest and eat.

Points of interest:

Baths of Agistrou: Its stone Byzantine bath (or hammam) was built in 950 AD and is considered one of the oldest in Greece.

Spa experience: The hot water of the Byzantine stone bath-hammam awaits us, for yet another unique experience. Hot water offers relaxation, relief, and well-being to our bodies.

The "Metaxas Path" is a pre-war path used by the locals to reach the "Three Fountains" and from there to Sidirokastro. The route passes through fortifications built during the Second World War. These fortresses were the defense mechanisms of Greece in the Greek-Bulgarian zone during the Metaxas era and significantly delayed the Germans in their entry into our country.

Track features:

a) Degree of difficulty: Level 2 - Moderate

b) Hiking duration: 4-4.50 hours

c) Distance: 11 km.

d) Circular route

22 euros/person by bus.

*After the end of our hike, anyone who wishes can, in their free time, try the experience of the thermal baths of Agistros for relaxation.

* After the end of our hike, anyone who has free time can visit the traditional taverns of Agistros.

3. Second top, socks, trousers, and a small towel (change)

12. The essentials in case you enter the thermal baths - optional participation (towel, etc.)

Note 1. When you click to book, state in the message where you will take the bus from. The options are Voulgari (Everest), Aristotelous (Statue of Venizelos) or One Salonica. E.g. Statue of Venizelos

Note 2. In case of cancellation of the event due to bad weather conditions, the excursion is moved to another date. Participants unable to participate on that date will be refunded. However, if again the weather conditions do not allow the event to take place, the event is permanently canceled and everyone is refunded. In case of cancellation by the participants, 7 days or less before the date of the event, the money is not returned.

Note 3. Photographic material is shared on our page and social media after each event. By participating in a Salonica View event, you also accept the sharing of photos. Otherwise, please let us know.

Note 4. For the best functioning of the event and safety reasons, participants must comply with the instructions of the attendants.
