Overview

The Salonica View alternative tourism office organizes a one-day hiking trip on the trails of Mountain Halkidiki, specifically on the mountain of Holomont.

A few words about our trip:

We will start by bus from Thessaloniki and at a distance of about one hour and fifteen minutes from our city, we will reach the village of Taxiarchis in the mountainous massif of Holomontas. The starting point of our hike will be just outside the village. At the beginning of our route, we will follow a rural road and then we will enter a path. We will walk through the dense forest facing the famous Holomonts firs that are grown in the area and available from the fir producers during the Christmas season. We will make our first rest stop at the fountain of "Kynige" and then we will climb up to the neck of "Bukas" at 920m. During our route, we will see the view of the Aegean emerging. Our hike will end in the picturesque town of Arnaia, where it will welcome us, decorated for Christmas, to relax for coffee and/or food. The route is suitable for children aged 10+, accompanied by an adult.

Points of interest:

Holomontas:

Mountain of the prefecture of Halkidiki with a maximum altitude of 1,165 meters. It is the second-highest mountain of the Halkidiki peninsula and covers almost the entire eastern and central part of the prefecture. It is covered by dense vegetation mainly of deciduous trees such as oak and broadleaf. A large part of the mountain has been included in the Natura 2000 network. The mountain has been known since ancient times for its timber, which was sought after by shipbuilders. There are also many types of mushrooms, aromatic plants, and herbs, while the fauna of the area is also rich with many species of wild animals and birds.

Arnaia:

It is a Historical Site and Traditional Settlement and is located at the foot of Holomont, at an altitude of 600 m. In the settlement, some beautiful traditional houses and buildings remain intact to this day, as they are excellent examples of Macedonian traditional architecture. Arnaia has many narrow cobbled streets which are a reference point for this small town. On the walk that you may take, you will see the Mansion of Arnaia, where today the Historical and Folklore Museum is housed, as well as the old school that was built in 1872 next to the church of Saint Stefanos.

Taxiarchis:

The village of Taxiarchis is well known in Holomonta, where its square is lined with cafes and taverns. The name of the village is due to Archangel Michael, whose temple is located in the area.
