Overview

The Salonica View team organizes a one-day hike in the Platy Valley - Tzielefos Bridge

A few words about our route:

We will start by bus from the handicraft center to the village of Milikouri where we will begin our hike in the Platy valley with destination to the beautiful bridge of Tzielefos. The route is an easy linear distance of 15 km. After resting, taking pictures, and enjoying nature in one of the most beautiful times of the year, we will get back on the bus to Platres where we will have free time for lunch.

A few words about Platys Valley:

An area of unparalleled natural beauty between the villages of Milikouri, Kaminaria, and Saint Nikolaos, about 15 km from Platres. On the north side of the path, there is the Komitzi picnic area, with a capacity of 420 people. Of greater interest is the southern side, which covers a distance of about 7 km and is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. In particular, the path on the south side passes through a wide dirt road, next to a stream and is particularly easy for the whole family to cross.

The valley of Platis is a valley of extraordinary beauty, in which the poetry and harmony of nature are depicted. Plane trees, ferns, pines, and figs are the dominant trees of the area, while it is not at all improbable to meet rare wild ones. Lakes and streams make up this wonderful scenery. Near the valley on the Saints Nikolaos - Kaminaria route are the two medieval bridges of Elia and Tjielefos.

A few words about the bridge of Tzielefos:

The "Tzielefos" bridge is located in the forest of Paphos, near the Turkish Cypriot village of Saint Nikolaos. It was built during the Venetian rule in Cyprus (between 1489 – 1571), and it belongs together with the bridge of Elia and Routhkia, forming a complex of Venetian bridges that were built to serve the access of the then residents of the area. The bridge of Tzielefos is built over the Diarizos River and is the largest of the medieval bridges on the island. Various interpretations have been given for the origin of the bridge's name, but none has been confirmed. Perhaps it comes from the ancient Greek word "Kelephos" which means weak, or sick and is connected to some incident or person during its construction. A little further down, the Diarizos River ends at the Armino Dam, forming a landscape of unparalleled beauty. It is built of stone coming mainly from the river. Schematically, the bridge is single-arched and on its southern side, a cross engraved on a stone can be faintly discerned.

The bridge is part of the so-called "camel army" along with the other two medieval bridges in the area. "Kamilostrata" was for centuries the main trade route for transporting copper from the Pera Pedi mine to the ports of Paphos and Polis. It was transported by camels to Pera Vasa, where the ore was processed, and from there by horses to the port. The road was used by passers-by as well as merchants of the time. At the edges of the river, there seems to be a flattened area that may have served as a waiting area, since during the period of the Venetian rule, the street was very active. It is believed that it was also the connection of Paphos with the rest of the provinces, while at the same time, it served the needs of the inhabitants of the area by connecting the villages of the west bank with the villages of the east.
