The Salonica View team organizes a one-day hike to the Venetian bridge of Zelefou.
A few words about our trip:
Our route will start from the Nicosia Cypriot Handicrafts Center and we will head towards Limassol. Then we will head to the village of Agios Nikolaos in Paphos where we will move towards the bridge of Tzelefos. From there we will start our hike, our route will last about 2 hours. Then, we will board our bus and make a stop at Omodos village for coffee/food and rest. Finally, we will return to our bus to take the way back.
A few words about Omodos:
Omodos is a village in the district of Limassol. It is located at an altitude of 575 meters above sea level. Omodos were probably created at the end of the Byzantine period. The foundation of the settlement was the dissolution of the Pano and Kato Koupetra settlements. The inhabitants created a new settlement around the original monastery of the Holy Cross, which was called Omodos.
Hiking Features:
Starting point: Jelefou Bridge
Length: 4 kilometers
Time: 2 hours
Degree of difficulty: 1
Points of interest:
The "Tzelefou Bridge", is located at an altitude of 440 meters in the forest of Paphos, 6 kilometers from the Turkish Cypriot village of Agios Nikolaos, and is the largest medieval stone bridge on the island. It is also built on the Diarrizos river which feeds the Arminos fence. It was built during the Venetian rule in Cyprus and belongs together with two other bridges (that of Elia and that of Routhkia) to a complex of Venetian bridges that were built to serve the access of the then residents of the area. Various interpretations have been given for the origin of the bridge's name, but none have been confirmed. Perhaps it comes from the ancient Greek word "Kelephos" which means weak, sick, and is associated with some incident or person during its construction.
