The team of Salonica View organizes a one-day excursion and hike in the Avaka Gorge.
A few words about the Avaka Gorge:
The Avaka Gorge is considered the most beautiful destination for hikers and nature lovers. For many, it is the jewel of the Akama peninsula. The carved limestone rocks that rise up to 30 meters, the wildlife of the path, and the river “Avgas” that goes through it, give you the impression of an earthly paradise.
Points of interest:
The Avaka Gorge trail is located in the gorge of the same name, within the forest of Pegeia, while the end of the route is inside the gorge. It follows the course of the river Avga, from where the gorge takes its name. The gorge was created by continuous erosive activity on the weathering, sloping limestone cliffs composed of fertile, silty soil, coralline and granular limestone, and bentonite mud. The gorge is also an area within the NATURA 2000 network. In the beginning, the trail follows a dirt road (closed to private vehicles) through an open valley and then leads you into the gorge. In its last part, the path is in the stream, where the water usually flows all year round. The route through the gorge is characterized by dense vegetation and a particularly attractive, shady, and wet environment.
